Guide to London: Accommodations, Restaurants, and Things to Do
London has always been a dream destination for me since I was a little girl. The vibrant lights, iconic landmarks, and lively energy of the city continually called to me. Growing up in Connecticut, I had the privilege of taking yearly trips to New York City, the city of dreams, but I knew I needed to venture across the Atlantic to begin my ultimate backpacking trip—the trip of a lifetime.
Finally, in January 2022, I made my way to London, marking the beginning of a three-month-long backpacking journey. Here are some of the most treasured moments from my time in London.
Affordable Accommodations in London
Wombats City Hostel quickly became my home away from home. With its welcoming staff, tidy rooms, social game room, and spacious kitchen, I had an excellent first experience staying in a hostel—spoiler alert for future blog posts: not all of my hostel experiences were so positive.
This hostel was conveniently located within walking distance of almost everything, especially once I got the hang of the Tube system.

Food & Drinks
Borough Market:
A food lover’s paradise. You can sample artisanal cheeses, indulge in pastries, or savor gourmet street food from around the world. As locals and tourists mingle, the market buzzes with conversation, making it the perfect place to explore.
Highly recommend the Pad Thai station!
Serpentine Bar & Kitchen: Serving breakfast, hot food including wood-fired pizza, fish & chips and burgers. There is also a selection of salads, sandwiches and cakes available to takeaway and enjoy in Hyde Park
Fish & Chips: I am not an expert on fish and chips in London, but I stumbled upon The Anchor for a plate, and it checked every box!

Top Things to Do in London on a Budget
Buckingham Palace: Because, well duh, you should go and see it, just like Big Ben (A.K.A The Elizabeth Tower) and the London Eye 😉
Sky Garden:
A panoramic 360-degree view of the city— completely free! I was unsure what to expect, but I was blown away by the views and the height we were at. The botanical garden was beautiful, and visitors could enjoy a drink while taking in the sights. If I had more time, I would have brought a book and settled in a cozy corner to enjoy those views.
The Sky Garden, located on the 35th, 36th, and 37th floors of the Walkie-Talkie skyscraper
Hyde Park
While wandering around, we stopped by the lake and ended up buying a cheese pizza to enjoy at sunset while people-watching (because who doesn’t love hearing the different accents against that view?). Since I visited London in the winter, I didn’t get to go on one of those boats, but I definitely would have loved it. Overall, it was wonderful to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a long walk that ultimately turned into a bike ride because I saw everyone else doing it, and it looked like fun (and it was!).
